Bratislava is the capital city of the Slovak Republic. As most capitals, it is the largest by population. The metropolitan area is divided into eight districts - Bratislava I through V and Malacky, Senec and Pezinok.
The number of inhabitants of the metropolitan Bratislava area is 622 706 (2009), the number for the 5 city districts is 431 061 (2009), Malacky has 69 198 (2009), Pezinok has 58 767 and Senec has 63 680 (2009). The last 10 years have seen a typical demographic migration trend called suburbanization. The population of the Bratislava suburbs had risen significantly, also the village-like boroughs have seen a dramatic increase in population.
