3 Recommendations for Classic Slovak Films

Fontana pre zuzanu

This feels retro, a 1980's teenage heartthrob type film, akin to what was being shown in the West at that time, but with a Slovak flavor to it, and some great music from Elan, which still gets remenicent play time on the radio. For the best effect, watch it with a Slovak woman who was anywhere from adolescence to coming of age at that time. It will be fantastic.

Obchod na korze

a holocaust film that doesn't shock you in what it shows, but shocks you without showing you. Much happens off screen, much of it shown time and again. This is a film that makes you feel the holocaust and not a film that shocks you as you watch the holocaust.

Kolia

(this film is not from Slovakia, but it very well could have been with
it's depictions of communist life in Czechoslovakia in 1967-8) - The one about the butcher - The script of this film is a bunch of communist crap - anyone with money will
become corrupted, anyone who disobeys the government will fall down a slippery slope of moral degredation. The film has some memorable characters.
