Basic Phrases In Slovak Language
These basic conversation words and phrases should give you overview of Slovak language and help you on your trips to Slovakia. You can hear the correct pronunciation by using the sound player button next to each word.
While most young Slovaks now learn English in schools, many older people speak only Slovak and use German or Russian as their second language. As Slovakia is not yet overrun by tourists, people are usually quite willing to offer assistance, even if their foreign language skills are moderate. Like in many other countries, learning even a few basic words of Slovak will excite the locals and is a worthwhile investment even for short-term visitors. Moreover, many words in Slovak are derived from foreign words, as this funny article shows.
Restaurants in tourist areas offer menus in English or German but in many smaller towns menus are only available in Slovak.
Choose words or phrases you would like to learn by looking at the following sections of our Slovak Language Guide:
Greetings and General Discussion - Pozdravy a bezna rec
On the Street - Na ulici
In Restaurants - V restauracii
Hotels and Other Accommodations - Ubytovanie
Love and Friendship - Laska a priatelstvo
Numbers - Cislovky
Days of the Week - Dni v tyzdni
Months - Mesiace
Drinks - Napoje
Soups - Polievky
Appetisers - Predjedla
Main Dishes - Hlavne jedla
Side Dishes - Prilohy
Desserts - Dezerty
Fruits and Vegetables - Ovocie a zelenina

One thing I want to reply to is that weightloss routine fast can be achieved by the proper diet and exercise. Someone's size not just affects appearance, but also the actual quality of life. Self-esteem, major depression, health risks, in addition to physical abilities are impacted in an increase in weight. It is possible to do everything right whilst still having a gain. In such a circumstance, a medical problem may be the culprit. While too much food but not enough exercising are usually the culprit, common medical conditions and traditionally used prescriptions might greatly enhance size. Thx for your post right here. http://onekingslanecoupon.com http://onekingslanecoupon.com

My great grandparents, grandparents are from Slovakia. My dad can speak some Slovak from when he was growing up (but cannot write it). There is an expression he and Dzedo used to say. Phonetically it sounds like: Ash Vaddas (all the A's sounding like the A in Father). According to my dad, he said it was an expression meaning something like "not once, but twice". Used as an exasperated response to something one thinks is foolish, stupid, reckless. I just wondered how the phrase is written in Slovak and if that is the correct meaning (or close enough). Dakujem!

There is so much useful information here and, unlike so many other sites, blogs et al on the net, this one is devoid of disparaging remarks. I can only assume we have you to thank. It's possible I will be moving to Slovakia (Liptovsky Mikulas) next year with my girlfriend, we're both madly in love and she is a little homesick. Just wondering how hard is it to pick up the language and get a job if all you have is French and English! I'm from Ireland and am 23 years old. Any ideas??
ADMIN: You should probably take some Slovak for foreigners courses, otherwise the language is quite difficult to learn. Although, you should be able to speak common words and phrases in few months. Try to buy a book of Slovak for foreigners even before coming to Slovakia and learning some basic stuff.

to Danka, re: veď preto -- thanks for the explanation. I have a very dear friend in Bratislava; she's teaching me Slovak and I teach her Serbian, which is my native language. Interestingly enough, Serbian has something similar in function. We say simply: "Bolje!" /bolye/, loosely meaning "you better have". I suspect the two phrases coincide to some extent in most use cases. Anyhow, I'll make sure to try "veď preto" on my friend next time we chat. :)

Hi, you asked about the meaning of "Ved preto!", it's been a month, but still, if you happen to take a look at this page again... "Ved preto" is almost impossible to translate into English, but it's generally used in situations when it looks like something which will displease the speaker is going to happen, but in the end he/she discovers it's not so, no need to get angry. it's as if the person said: "It's good that the bad thing i expected is not going to happen, otherwise i would have to get terribly angry" e.g. your girlfriend suspects you haven't washed the dishes (as you promised) and so she's already a bit angry when she asks you about it, but then you assure her that the dishes are all clean and dry, to which she says "Ved preto". here it means st. like "you're a lucky man, i'm not going to hit the roof this time". of course, "Ved preto" can be used in all sorts of ironic and sarcastic contexts :)

Thanks for that, but all i got was "Therefore, Ved" which isnt quite right apparently, it needs a bit more of an explanation.. apparently its similar to when say something stops working, say a TV, you hit it and it does work again and you might say "Ved Preto".. but that is only one slight use.... I guess i am looking for more an interpretation than translation.. but thank you for the info. Cheers.

Hi, this site is great. My slovak is basic - I want to ask my Slovak girlfriend to marry me, but I can't figure which of these phrase (assuming all are gramatically correct) would be best, any advice from a native really appreciated!! I tend to prefer the first one since it's short...
1. Vezmes si ma?
2. Zoberies si ma za muza?
3. Chcel by si ma vziat?
Thanks a lot...
ADMIN: Congratulations, please do consider what Viktor wrote here on February 11. The first two are grammatically correct, the first can be amended with the words "za muza", too - the third should read ChcelA by si si ma vziat and you can add "za muza" to it too. If you want a short phrase, you could also propose saying "Vydas sa za mna?" pronounced "Vee-dush sah zah mneeah?"

I think about you everyday and night. When I am with you, you light up my life. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I wish upon a star for you to return back by my side. The love that I hold for you in my soul is greater than an ocean or the sky above. Please forgive me for all the hurt that I have caused you. Please, I beg of you to forgive me and return back by my side like the way that it was meant to be. I love you, and I always will until the day that I die. Hopefully, when that day comes, I will still have you by my side and you will be the last angel face that I see. I will be able to hold you in my arms one last time, and tell you how much I love you and how much you really mean to me. I love you! I know that I'm not perfect but I know that I don't want to give you up. I have waited too long to hold you in my arms. I guess I just need to vent and let you know how I feel. Please don't take my venting the wrong way. I do love you and don't want to break up with you. That would just make me even more imperfect than I already am. I sit here in sorrow, wishing I could hold you.

Is the 'l' in 'klobasy' (klobasy - sausage) pronouced the same as the Polish 'Ł' in 'kiełbasa' (keiłbasa = Sausage) or is it as in the english 'l' ('love')? I've looked but can't find an explanation.

The language appears very simliar and because I can speak a little Polish I've got a head start. The phrases that you've got written here will help me lots in my forthcoming trip to Slovakia. Many thanks, -M

Hi Darryn,
I have fallen in love with you is, if you are boy: Zažúbil som sa do Teba. The pronunciation is approximately: Zaloobil som sah doh Tebah
a= is like the letter u in the word mUst
e= is like the letter e in the word AmErica
o= is like o in the word Old
If u r girl, it's almost the same but to the word Zažúbil u have to add the letter a, which means Zažúbila (zaloobilah)

I had the pleasure of visiting Bratislava when i went to watch my football team Glasgow Rangers this year...It is very cheap compared to the UK and these basic phrases helped me very much....Rangers made the last 16 of the Champions League though :P Artmedia Bratislava didnt :) and they were lucky to get a draw against us in both games.

I like this little list of general phrases very much, and because of that I can do shorter conversations with my slovak friends. But i would very much like to have a full translation software, so I can write long centenses, and they will appear in good slovak language. All these softwares are expensive.I pray to God he will bring me what I need, to do deep and good conversations and letters to my friends in Bratislava.
God be With you all

As a slovenian I understand almost everything the slovakians say especially after a few Zlatny Bazants or Gorgons...after many many drinks like those two, I can even speak slovakian :-)

Thank you, it is very helpful, especially because it's only three pages and the choices of words and phrases are ones used most often. In the US I went to travlang.com which you might also suggest at the end of your list. Travlang gives the pronounciation--sometimes tricky to reproduce :) I have fallen in love with your (my) Slovakia! We came for a week to see grandparents' villages--Dubrava and Obisovice. Also we visited Surany, my friend's inlaws grandparents birthplaces. In all towns we were cordially received by the mayors (did not see Dubrava mayor because not sure it was the right Dubrava). They gave us postcards ( even from little village Obisovice!)and booklets. My mother taught me "va di la mushishte kashetsu"...mother mouse rhyme giving her children bowl, spoon, etc. I have repeated it with great laughing success to many native Slovaks. Old customs are still remembered. again, thank you from my heart, Linda Lee Horvath
