The Zoo began service in 1960, covers a total of 96 hectares (237 acres), and has a total of 656 animals, from 157 different species. The most precious species are the European Bison, White Rhinoceros, Turkmenian Kulan, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Golden-Cheeked Gibbon, Sri Lankan Leopard, Cotton-headed Tamarin, Gray Mouse Lemur, and Pygmy Loris.
The Zoo has a new "Dino Park" and a brand new pavilion for cat-like animals, and a separate older pavilion for reptiles. A lot of the exhibits, especially the Dino Park are unique in central Europe. The Dino park, is a recreation of prehistoric times, with robotic structures covered with rubber skin, designed to look similar to how a dinosaur might have looked. Basically the Dino Park is a theme park, with games connected to archeology and it also offers dinosaur-themed meals.
The Zoo and Dino Park are located near Mlynska Dolina, an area filled with university dormitories, so you access it the same way - take bus 31 or 39 from Zochova (just outside of the Historic Center), for approximately 10 minutes and the bus stop is called "Zoo." The taxi ride from the Old Town is under ten minutes.
During the summer season (April 1 - October 31) the Zoo is open 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. During the winter season (November 1 - March 31) it is open 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
