Ice hockey in Bratislava
Ice hockey
Ice hockey is the most popular spectator sport in Slovakia. The country proudly turns into "hockey country" for the 2011 Ice Hockey World Championship held in Bratislava and Košice.
The world championship trophy brought home by the Slovak national team in 2002 was celebrated with street parties of a scale previously unseen in Slovakia.
Bratislava is represented in the Slovak national league by HC Slovan Bratislava (in Slovak only). Slovan played its home games at the ice hockey arena on Odbojarov. The stadium, main venue of the 2011 World Championship undergoes a complete makeover in 2010 to expand to 10,000 spectators capacity.
Tickets to regular season games cost € 1-€ 7 with prices rising for play-off games.
Tickets can be bought at the stadium on game days. For the game schedule check HC Slovan Bratislava website (home games marked in blue) or the Bratislava Event Calendar Sports section.
The IIHF decided in May 2006 that Bratislava and Kosice (Slovakia's second city) will host the 2011 World Ice Hockey Championship. We are a Hobby Icehockeyteam from Austria and would like to stay a few days in Bratislava to practice hockey and have fun. Can you recommend any ice stadium, which is not too expensive, maybe including a trainer to get some instruction.( skating,taktiks..) We plan to come from the 2nd to the 4th of february 2007.

Grainne, Chris, unfortunately very bad time to go to Bratislava for an ice-hockey game. As you certainly know, there are Winter Olympic Games in Torino between 10 and 24th February, including the hockey tournamanent with Slovakian national team present. So all the major hockey leagues have to have a break. The closest home games in Bratislava: Feb. 3 and Feb. 28, beginnings at 6:30 PM.
