University Library in Bratislava

This is the oldest and most visited research library in Bratislava.
It's a center of knowledge, the primary publicly accessible library in Bratislava and is a Slovak, UN, NATO, and UNESCO depository library. It seeks to safeguard the cultural and literary heritage of the Slovak nation.
It also served as the national library until 1954. Some collections date back to 17th century. Its Basagic Collection of Islamic Manuscripts, one of the most precious items in its holdings, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List ‘Memory of the World’.
The University Library is also home to two extensive English language collections - one was donated by the United States Embassy, who closed its own reading room in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. The second was given by an American academic of Slovak descent - Victor Mamatey; it deals with the history, politics, and culture of Slovakia and the region.
Located in the pedestrian zone of the historical center of Old Town, near the old City Hall and Zichy Palace, Austrian Embassy, St. Martin's Cathedral.
As fantastic as the information in the place is, it can be a bit daunting to deal with any staff member, any rule, and policy of the library. Costumer service or sharing knowledge is generally not the goal - keeping books hidden seems to be more of the goal.
If you are entering the library for a tour or to see a specific exhibition, entry is free. However, if you are not doing that, there is a somewhat complicated menu of prices that will confuse anyone who takes a look at it.
The opening hours are prone to change seemingly with a moment's notice, making the University Library, occasionally, a difficult place to plan a visit. Visit the website to check on opening hours, but do not be surprised to show up at the library and to see a sign announcing a change in hours.
