The Slovak National Theater will be performing Verdi´s opera – La Traviata. Tickets range from € 5 to € 25 and they can be purchased at the theatre´s box office. Melodramma in three acts (sung in Italian)
The first performance of Verdi´s 'La traviata', which took place in Venice in 1853, was an unmitigated fiasco. The audience was shocked by the work: defying the conventions of Italian opera of the time, Verdi had presented a contemporary story – one in which, moreover, the main heroine was a kept woman! Verdi revealed himself a very modern dramatist in choosing as his source a novel that was only five years old: 'La Dame aux camelias' by Alexandre Dumas fils, the story of Marie Duplessis, the famous courtesan and darling of Parisian society in the 1840s. Verdi´s music so convincingly captured and enhanced the opera´s literary source that the work recorded its first triumphs only shortly after its hapless premiere. Since then this gem of Italian opera has remained one of the most popular titles in the repertoire.
The Slovak National Theatre has box offices at both the New Building (entrance from Olejkarska Street) and Historical Building (entrance from Jesenskeho Street). The box office is always open an hour before the start of each event and half an hour after the start of each event as well as being open year round 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the week, Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to noon.
