Slovakia joins European Union on May 1
The Slovak Republic joined the European Union, an economic and social union creating a joint market for 25 of Europe's states.
The country is one of the ten new member states alongside the Czech
Republic, Hungary, Poland, the Baltics, Slovenia, Malta and Cyprus.
Bratislava marked the date with celebrations, major fireworks, concerts and other events.
The
Slovak currency remains the Slovak crown. There remain border controls
at all borders, but are now done only by the police and not the customs.
Euro currency should be introduced between 2007-2009.
