Slovakia European Parliament vote with lowest turnout in EU
Briefly after joining the European Union, Slovak citizens will vote for the first time ever to elect 13 representatives for the Brussels-based European legislative body.
The election was won by Prime Minister Mikulas Dzurinda's SDKU ticket led by the former hockey player Peter Stastny. The party garnered just over 17 percent of the vote, followed by the former authoritarian Primer Minister's HZDS and SMER.
"Try explaining the mechanics of the "co-decision" process to a group of elderly Slovaks who know only one thing about Brussels: it's an awfully long way from Bratislava," BBC News' Stephen Sackur wrote on June 8 in Euro-euphoria fades in new states.
The expectations for turnout were low, reported the Slovak Spectator in its May 10 article. But the Spectator also quoted a poll putting expected turnout at 29%, far above the result recorded.
