Slovak Republic-Argentina Davis Cup 2005 Semifinal in Bratislava

UPDATED - Bratislava, September 25, 2005 (BratislavaGuide.com) - Slovakia beat Argentina 3-2 in the Davis Cup semi-final.

On Saturday Slovakia took a 2-1 lead after winning the doubles on the fast indoor surface of the National Tennis Centre in Bratislava on Saturday and clinched its victory on Sunday when Hrbaty beat Goria in three sets.

Karol Beck and Michal Mertinak beat David Nalbandian and Mariano Puerta 7-6 7-5 7-6 in 2 hours, 45 minutes in Saturdays doubles.

On Friday, the teams gained a point each after Slovakia's Karol Beck beat Guillermo Coria and Dominik Hrbaty lost to David Nalbandian. In the first match, Beck won smoothly over the eight-ranked favourite 7-5 6-4 6-4. Nalbandian won 3-6 7-5 7-5 6-3 to pull the favoured Argentina level.

Slovakia's Davis Cup tennis representation faced Argentina in the World Group 2005 semifinals in Bratislava on September 23-25, 2005.

The matches were played at the National Tennis Centre at Prikopova street indoors on a hard surface.

Slovakia beat Netherlands 3-1 on July 17, 2005 in Bratislava, while Argentina scored a 4-1 victory in Sydney over Australia. Argentina are the strong favourites having played in two additional semi-finals in the last four years as Slovakia makes its debut in the semi-finals.

Slovakia will later face Croatia in the final on December 24. Croatia beat Russia in this weekend's semi-final.
