Sunny Lakes (Slnecne jazera) / Senec
The biggest dominating feature which had made the town Senec famous at home and abroad is the Sunny Lakes, a popular summer resort some 25 km outside of Bratislava.
The rise of the Sunny Lakes is connected with the intensive excavating of gravel since 1845 which was mined by Hungarian building railway administration in order to build up the railways from Bratislava to Galanta. Five independent lakes came into existence by intensive excavating which were joined together into the one entity. The lake with the area of 116 hectares arose with the deepness of 12 metres on some places. The possibility to take advantage of the so called lake “Báger” as the natural swimming or bathing pool came into existence from the cooperation of Slovak Community Centre in Senec and The 59th staff of the Slovak League and they decided to use the lake “Báger” for swimming and bathing in 1919. The natural bathing and swimming pool “Báger” received its new name “Slovak Tahiti”. Its name did not become tamed and inhabitants of Senec and its other visitors of bathing pool called the lake and lakes “Báger”. The 59th Staff of the Slovak League in Senec took charge of the Sunny Lakes definitely in 1930. It rented the lake from the council ÈSD, decided to fence it, build a refreshment bar and some stands on the beach, furthermore, to establish a small boathouse. The profit of the entrance fee per a person (1.50 Kès) was given to support the poor Slovak students by the Slovak League.
Renowned “Benátske noci” took place on the Sunny Lakes and the youth used to play tennis, volleyball and other games. Its current name “the Sunny Lakes” was given to the lake “Báger” by advertisement on a new name of this natural bathing pool in 1960.
The Sunny Lakes has become very favourite aim of holiday stays of its visitors not only from Slovakia, but from the whole Europe; furthermore, the Sunny Lakes are visited by inhabitants of overseas.
