Bratislava New Year 2009 Celebrations - Welcoming the Euro
The 10th year of public New Year's festivities organised by the city of Bratislava will focus on welcoming Slovakia's new currency, the Euro.
New Year's celebrations will take place in the centre of the city in two focal areas.
The Concert Zone located in the Main Square will feature live music performances by Slovak performers from 6:30 pm to 1:30 am. Polemic, a ska band will be up first, followed by leading jazz singer Peter Lipa, pop disco techno indie band Puding pani Elvisovej, pop and rock formation Para. Before midnight Hex, a popular rock and pop band will perform. After midnight, it will be I.M.T. Smile.
From 7:30 pm Tibor Bircak will try for a Guiness World Record - he will try to spend at least an hour in a barrel filled with ice at -18 degrees Celsius (the attempt will be aborted if his body temperature falls by more than four degrees).
The Party Zone in Hviezdoslavovo Square will start off with four live performances at 5 p.m. From 10:30 pm there will be a DJ performing until 2:30 am.
The countdown to midnight and the midnigt fireworks will take place nearby, by the Danube river.
