2011 IIHF World Championships Wolf Mascot Receives Name and Facelift
Updated May 3, 2010 with information on English meaning of mascot's nameBratislava, April 30, 2010 (BratislavaGuide.com) - Organisers of the 2011 IIHF world Championships scheduled to take place in Slovakia have announced that the Slovak public have voted Goooly as the new name for the wolf mascot.
They also revealed a new design for the wolf by Slovak designer Peter Hrevus, after the public rejected the original wolf image by a Swiss design firm. The daily SME quoted several designers as saying the new mascot was unspectacular but much better than the original.
The new name has also come under fire. Slovak journalist of Canadian origin Tom Nicholson pointed out the word "gooly" means a testicle in slang English (and Urban Dictionary online offers a second definition, an Unapologetically Pathetic Loser).
The championships will take place in Bratislava and Kosice starting April 29, 2011.
