Devin Castle
Remains of the 8th century castle located on the outskirts of Bratislava, at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The castle serves as a museum of its rich history.
Devin was first mentioned in writing in the year 864. The castle was destroyed by Napoleon's army in the early 1800's. The castle has become an important Slovak national symbol.
Devin is a pretty place to walk around, have some lunch, and look across the river and across the former Iron Curtain into Austria. Swimming the river from this spot was one of the pathways to the West.
Bus 29 goes to Devin from under Novy Most (New Bridge), a trip which lasts about 30 minutes, traveling west along the bank of the Danube. A popular hiking route goes from Bratislava's Dubravka section to Devin over the Small Carpathian Hill - Devinska Kobyla and takes about 2 1/2 hours.
