Bratislava Coronation Festivities on Saturday, September 6, 2008


Crowning the KingEvery year the first weekend of September Bratislava stages Coronation Festivites, a majestic reenactment of the historical coronation of Hungarian kings.

11 kings and eight queens were crowned in Bratislava between 1563 and 1830. Bratislava became the coronation city of Austria-Hungary following the battle of Mohacs in 1526, where the Ottoman Empire occupied parts of Hungary.


Coronation ProcessionThe 2008 Bratislava Coronation Festivities take place on September 6. The coronation ceremony will take place in the Old Town. This year the Festivities will commemorate the 1618 coronation of King Ferdinand II.

The Coronation Procession from the Bratislava Castle will begin at 2 pm on Saturday, followed by the crowning of Ferdinand II. in the Main Square at 2:30 pm. Knights of the Order of the Golden Spur will be knighted at 3:45 pm at the Hviezdoslavovo Square.


GunThe events continues at 5:30 pm in Petrzalka on the right-hand bank of the Danube River with reenactments of the 30-year war. At 7:30 pm there will be an Old Town Execution at the Hviezdoslavovo Square. The day culminates in fireworks at 9:30 pm.
