Currency in Bratislava, Slovakia - Slovak crowns and Euros for shopping
The Slovak Republic plans to join the Euro-zone within a few years but at present the currency in use is the Slovak crown (or slovenska koruna). In most shops and other outlets, only payment in Slovak crowns is accepted.
Some shops in Bratislava will accept payment in euros, however, often at a rate below that offered at the bank. Also, they may not be unable to make change in euros. The Tesco supermarket accepts euros but only bills not worth more than twice the price of the customer's pruchase.
Slovak currency consists of notes of SKK 5000, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20. Getting change for an SKK 5000 bill may be difficult in smaller shops. Coins in use are SKK 10, SKK 5, SKK 2, SKK 1 and 50 haliers (one half of a Slovak crown).

Mastercard and Visa payment cards are widely accepted (both signature-based and with PIN-number). Money can be exchanged at a variety of foreign exchange counters (generally safe), at banks (fees vary). Street transactions are extremely risky.
