Bratislava Cinemas

There are over 20 cinemas and film clubs (FKs) located in Bratislava. Most of them are traditional medium size cinemas with one screen. However, during last five years, three new cinemas were opened in Bratislava shopping centres.

Prevailing movies shown in Bratislava are the same as shown all around the globe, present world cinematography. Movies are usually shown with some delay after their first premiere abroad. Majority of them are subtitled, so foreigners will not have problem with Slovak dubbing.

Bratislava Cinema and Movie Club Schedules Information

The most popular database of cultural activities in Slovakia can be found at www.kultura.sk that provides information about movie and theater premieres, festivals, concerts, expositions and other cultural events in Slovakia. The only shortage is that all the information are in Slovak language, so it is almost useless for foreigner not speaking Slovak. There are many other such web pages (e.g. www.kamvyrazit.szm.sk/bratislava, www.cinemanet.sk, etc.), but there are none in English or any other foreign language. Another source of information about cinema schedules and other kinds of cultural events in Bratislava are information guides handed out freely in Bratislava like: Club Agenda, Propeller and "Kam do mesta" (Where to Go in the City). Unfortunately all of them are only in Slovak language.

Multiplex and Mall Cinemas

These cinemas were opened during last five years in Bratislava shoping centers. They have multiple screens, comfortable seats and additional services such as refreshments. Multiplex cinemas are the most popular cinemas in Bratislava, showing usually some 10 latest commercial movies with over 40 movie projections per day. Multiplexes capitalise on their location in shopping centers, with numerous shops and restaurants in its closest vicinity.

Prices are the highest of all cinemas in Bratislava, with admissions fees from SKK 99 (EUR 3.26) to SKK 169 (EUR 5.57) per ticket. Multiplex cinemas offer special discounted tickets for children, students, special ticket packages for families, discounted season tickets and usually one day per week, they offer special low prices to all its customers. Bratislava multiplexes are located in shopping malls in the wider centre of Bratislava.

Traditional Cinemas

Traditional cinemas were built during last 25-40 years, but some of them have undergone extensive refurbishment in recent years. Before arrival of new multiplex cinemas these established cinemas were the backbone of the Bratislava cinema scene. Many of them are facing financial problems due to stiff competition of multiplexes and find it still more difficult to attract ordinary cinema-goers.

Tickets are somewhat cheaper in these cinemas than in new multiplexes. They offer discounted prices for children. Their main advantage is location, while they are located all over Bratislava with some traditional cinemas right in the downtown Bratislava.
